Swivels for Horizontal Directional Drilling

HDD pullback swivels, Dub Swivels & Adaptors

No Dig Equipment supplies HDD pullback swivels for horizontal directional drilling applications. Our 5-ton, 8-ton and 12-ton swivels are designed to handle the tensile, rotational and side loads generated during HDD pullback.

When choosing an HDD swivel, select a unit with a rated capacity equal to or greater than the pullback capacity of your drill rig. Our swivels use bearings designed to handle both thrust and radial loads, with seals that help protect the bearings from drilling mud, dirt and underground debris.

Dub Swivels

Dub swivels provide an alternative connection for HDD pulling applications. They can be configured with a pulling eye adaptor to connect the pulling assembly directly to the starter rod when back reaming is not required.

This setup can be useful for smaller pulling applications where a direct connection to the starter rod is required.

Features:

  • Available in 5-ton, 8-ton and 12-ton capacities
  • Designed for HDD pulling applications
  • Can be configured with pulling eye adaptors
  • Provides a direct connection to the starter rod
  • Suitable for applications where back reaming is not required

HDD Pullback Swivels

An HDD swivel connects the drill string or reamer to the product being installed during pullback. The swivel allows the drilling assembly to rotate while reducing the transfer of rotational forces to the product being pulled.

HDD swivels are exposed to high loads during pullback, so choosing the correct capacity is important for reliable performance and protecting the pulling assembly.

Features:

  • Available in 5-ton, 8-ton and 12-ton capacities
  • Designed for horizontal directional drilling applications
  • Bearings handle both thrust and radial loads
  • Sealed bearings help protect against dirt and drilling mud
  • Designed to handle tensile and rotational forces during pullback
  • Available with compatible pulling eye adaptors

How to Choose the Right HDD Swivel

Choosing the correct swivel starts with the pullback capacity of your HDD drill rig.

  1. Check your drill rig’s pullback capacity.
Identify the maximum pullback force of your horizontal directional drill
  2. Select the appropriate swivel capacity.
Choose a swivel rated equal to or greater than the drill rig’s pullback capacity.
  3. Check the connection.
Make sure the swivel and any required adaptor are compatible with your drill rod, starter rod and pulling assembly
  4. Consider the application.
Check the bore size, product being installed and whether back reaming is required.
  5. Confirm the complete pulling assembly.
The swivel should work correctly with the reamer, pulling eye, adaptor and other HDD tooling being used.

Adaptors

With a simple Pulling Eye Adaptor, turn your swivel into a dub swivel. See the table beside for available sizes.

Adaptor suitable for Vermeer® and Ditch Witch® back reamers to suit our 5T, 8T & 12T Swivels.

Note : These adaptors are ideal for connecting small packages straight to the Starter Rod when back reaming is not required.

Frequently Asked Questions

An HDD swivel connects the drilling or reaming assembly to the product being installed during horizontal directional drilling. It allows the drilling assembly to rotate while reducing the transfer of rotational forces to the product and pulling assembly.

Choose an HDD swivel with a rated capacity equal to or greater than the maximum pullback capacity of your HDD drill rig. For example, a drill rig with a 12-ton pullback capacity should use a swivel rated for at least 12 tons.

An HDD swivel can be exposed to tensile, thrust, radial and rotational loads during HDD pullback. The swivel bearings are designed to allow rotation while handling these loads.

A Dub swivel is an HDD swivel that can be configured with a pulling eye adaptor for connecting smaller pulling assemblies directly to the starter rod when back reaming is not required.

Bearings allow the swivel to rotate while under load. This helps reduce rotational forces transferred through the pulling assembly during HDD pullback.

A pulling eye adaptor is used to connect the swivel to the product or pulling assembly. The required adaptor depends on the connection and pulling application.
