The Challenge Sports Stadium is a popular sports training and competition facility, attracting high traffic volumes on a daily basis. The works at the stadium included three asphalt-surfaced road crossings for the installation of reticulation and communications networks and a 65 metre bore under a paved roundabout in front of the main entrance.   The use of directional drilling methods achieved two objectives – minimal disruption to traffic and significant reinstatement cost savings.

Multiple subsurface services such as drainage, power, communications and reticulation provided additional challenges.

The roundabout crossing terminated at an external wall of the main building. The tight conditions demanded flexibility, dictating the use of PE pipe. PVC pipes were used for the road crossings, which were completed in two days.

In addition, the installation passed directly through an old waste tip site – brought to the attention of the contractors by a local resident after the pilot encountered some unexpected impediments. These included large limestone boulders, concrete waste and wrought iron.

Orpheus Contracting employs a Hanlyma HL518B machine, which is supplied with a range of reamers up to 600 mm diameter and has the capacity to drill over 150 metres with the standard drill rod complement.
